Bonn Day Trip from Cologne

Tuesday, October 31, 2017

During our stay in Cologne, we ventured out for a day-trip to charming little Bonn. It wasn’t a city that was etched into our itinerary from the start but one we booked in on an impromptu decision to get out and about.

Although Bonn used to be the capital of West Germany and hence had a pivotal role to play in WWII history, it still exudes a strong ‘small town’ vibe. After a short 30 minute train ride, we arrived it Bonn for a day to ourselves where we had absolutely no pre-booked plans or items to tick off. We indulged in a day of shopping, roaming the streets and trying local food.

While German food has been delicious throughout the trip, the Bratwurst sausage pictured above deserves a special mention. We had a vegan version from a small stall and boys are Aussie vegan sausages falling behind! Back home, most meat substitutes taste like rubber but the Bratwurst was absolutely delicious.

After ticking off plenty of items from our bucket list in earlier cities, wandering through Bonn with no plan and plenty of lingering Christmas spirit was just what we needed!

  1. I love that travelling in Europe is so accessible and treasures like these are only a train ride or affordable plane ride away. I wish travel were more affordable in Canada.

    1. I totally feel you! Its so bad in Australia too! We've got some amazing treasures in western australia or northern territory, but its more expensive to take a trip there than to go to nearby south east asian countries like thailand/vietnam/indonesia or newzealand etc.

    1. Germanny doesn't usually feature that high up on people's lists but it fit into our europe circle of Amssterdam-Germanny-Austria-Prague-Germany-Amsterdam really well. Also I love history and WWII history is a major portion that I wanted to learn about more :)
